Female owned small businesses, like myself, are spreading like wildfire all over the Grand Rapids area in hopes of helping to boost our down economy. In appreciation of these new female entrepreneurs I myself have taken the opportunity to put my experience and talent to work in order to help them grow and succeed by building their portfolios, websites & notoriety with my photography. Recently, I began working side by side with a new up and comer in the bridal fashion industry, Shannon Gales. Once Ethan Allen interior decorator, Shannon and I have been acquaintances for more then 10 years now. We met back in 2001 at A.J. Pinder & Co. Hair Design where I worked as a receptionist for a good decade through high school and college before I launched myself into the photography industry and opened my own studio. Back then she was a single mother of 3 with a big dream and a love for fashion. Now the newly married mom has taken big steps to bring fashion design to Grand Rapids with the opening of her new custom bridal design business VUE Design.

Like most women, Shannon has LOVED weddings ever since she was a young girl; the romance and the transformation of the bride truly gets her giddy. Her passion for beautiful fabrics married with lines that enhance individual form fuels her designs. Not only do her dresses have that personal touch each bride is looking for to make them stand out on their wedding day, but she also offers a personalized experience for each bride. By meeting with them for a one on one consultation, she is able to determine their desires and what design reflects not only their unique personality but their unique figure as well, offering a connection which is both emotional and physical but is essential to the completion of her designs. She has taken her 5+ years of experience working with people on fulfilling their visions in the interior design industry and applied it to her design process in order to develop a relationship with each of her brides and create not only an amazing, finely crafted dress but also an incredible experience for her clients.

Inspired by the beauty of change in the Michigan seasons she and I have brought her designs to life in a line up of four photo shoots beginning with the recent shoot at the Calvin College 106 Gallery on Division where we showcased 3 show stopping dresses from her 2011 line. The designs captured on film in this collection are born from her daydreams – apart from the one on one work she does with the individual brides. The VUE Design experience is for those who may want a different kind of process; a readymade couture design that becomes made-to-measure for them.

Chris and Amanda Wright had their Wedding Photographer go out of business and leave town shortly after their wedding. Without the released copyrights of their photos on cd, their best memories of the day would have been lost forever. Designing and formatting Proof books and Wedding albums takes considerably more time than one would imagine, but I was so happy to help this amazing couple to ensure they recieved the Album and Prints they deserve. So, a half a million thank you's to Mr. & Mrs. Wright for bringing me such a rewarding project : )

Who is Vue Couture?

A one-woman burgeoning empire, Shannon is a Grand Rapids native and Calvin College educated designer. All her work is custom designed and handmade with exceptional detailing. I'll have to get up-close and personal to ensure the photos do her work justice. Her style tends towards the classic and slightly vintage, but her highly involved consultative process sews bits and pieces each bride's personality into her dress. Shannon's fiery, red-headed nature comes to life during her consults. No idea is too grand or inconceivable to try and incorporate into the dress. After all, what bride wants to wear something that has already been seen before?

On St. Patty's day 2010 the luck of the Irish was on my side in the form of a diamond. After months of anticipation the infamous question was finally asked, he was finally on bended knee and the proposal was finally made. The setting was Riverside park on a beautiful, sunny day as we walked hand in hand down the path, with the sun lowering in the sky. One minute he was standing next to me the next minute he was on one knee holding up the vintage, princess cut diamond. Of course we all know I said "Yes!"

I would soon be a Mrs. Jennifer Bumstead! The date was set for August 21, 2010. Location for both ceremony & reception is Kent country club. Theme is romantic, classic, and vintage. The coordinators & decorators would be my favorite wedding planners, Ele3. The bridesmaids would be in J.Crew. The colors, my favorite, Barely Peach, Ivory & Champagne. The flowers, Poppies & Cabbage Roses. The decor, a mix of Luminars and Chandeliers.

With so many questions from friends and family about the details of my big day the most commonly asked question on everyones lips was who I would choose to photograph my wedding....? Good question............better answer, Kai Heeringa Photography. After going to high school with both Kai and his wife / photography assistant Kayley I knew they would be a perfect fit for us in personalities & style. I have followed Kai's work since he started using him as inspiration for many of my own images, so for me the answer was an easy one. After the engagement session I knew I had made the right choice! One of my specialties for newborns is the Milestone Package which includes 5 photo sessions from newborn to your child's 1st Birthday to record their stunning growth during that precious first year.
At the end of the first birthday session I bring the baby a little cake and then capture the typically messy results on film. Sometimes I don't know who has more fun.

You had one with your soulmate, and it turns out to be something you want in your wedding photorapher as well.

Every review on how to choose a photographer cited personality as the most important aspect in making your final decision.

It's essential to personally meet with your photographer prospects and ask yourself the followin questions:
When you're sitting across the table from them, how do they make you feel? Are you getting excited about your day as they talk about their involvement? When they talk about their product, do they exhibit a kind of giddiness or are they just selling? What adjective comes to your mind to describe them if you were asked 5 minutes after you've left the appointment?

Keep in mind that you will be spending all day with this person- and a very very important day at that! Look for a strong rapport, someone who will make you and your guests feel comfortable, and someone with enough expertise to ensure that their role in your wedding day will be executed without a hitch.

Beware in choosing a large photography firm who may just send someone you've never even met before to cover your special day.

By building a relationship before the big day, you and your photographer can anticipate sticky moments or plan out a need to coordinate photos around different family/friend structures. A good photographer who understands and is inspired by you, your story, and your vision should be able to instinctively know how to document your day in a way that will exceed even your highest expectations.

Every.Single.Frame. captures a moment you can't get back; a photographer whom you've created a special bond with, someone who has a vested interest in watching you experience your ultimate wedding day bliss will work harder to record all the details as well as seek out the emotions that convey the significance of the love of the couple as well as their surrounding love and admiration from friends and family.

Hopefully you've narrowed down your top photographer choices and now it's time to get into the nitty gritty. Which means it's time to talk about the money you will be paying, and what you'll be getting for those costs.

His/Her Time is Your Money:
Keep in mind that the photographer's work has barely begun at the end of the night. Editing photos as well as creating proofs to then send back to the newlyweds who will then choose the ones that the photographer arranges to be printed, as well as layouts of any possible albums, or other specialty display pieces that particular studio offers. The actual day works out to only be a fraction of his/her work!

Book your photographer as early as possible- especially if you'll be saying "I Do" during the primetime wedding months of May-September.

How many hours of coverage do you want on the actual day of your wedding? Consider before shots, the more formal portraiture session, time between ceremony and reception, as well as if you want just the highlights: cake cutting, bouquet toss, first dance or documentation of your entire night.

A fellow blogger, GeekSugar, recommends not asking about the length of time you should expect to wait to view your proofs/receive your prints, how many images are typically given to clients for review, and how long the photos will be archived after your place your print order.

With all those hours of detail work and artistic vision and talent come copyrights.
Copyrights tend to fall into the categories of:
Full Rights- to either the photographer OR client (whom will have to pay for those rights)
Shared Rights- both have full rights of use, but still need the others' permission to print
Limited Personal Use Rights- client may print for personal use, but photographer retains rights to publish photos for a profit/promotional interests

Wedding Museum.com references the importance of experience to the importance that the photographer manage stress well. Weddings can be similar to three-ringed circuses (in a multitude of ways) and your photographer should be able to make sense of the chaos and capturing the moments that make your wedding story unique.

Other questions to ask:
- Are you insured for liability and equipment?
- Do you bring an assistant? An assistant provides that extra set of hands to help with lighting and organizing to allow the photographer to do what he/she does best- take photos!
- Have you photographed at my venue before? There is an advantage to a photographer who already knows the lighting/layout of your venue; however, a good photographer should be able to adapt to any situation.
- Can you photograph our ceremony without flash?
- What is included and what is extra? Is there anything you recommend we add? Why?
- May I see a price list for any of the products that I might want to purchase after the wedding?
****Ask for a list of previous brides and their current contact information, they can give you the best mental picture of what to expect.

Is your photographer passionate about photography or simply just doing a job? There are literally thousands of wedding photographers that can take your pictures and do a good job. They can output posed pictures as easily as someone in an office creates a spreadsheet. To these generic photographers it is just a job. If you want something special you need to find an artist that loves photography and will combine skill, talent, and heart to capture your special day." -Rhonda Thompson, Professional Photographer, Georgia, USA

Make a Statement in your Home

A photograph can be more valuable than a work of art. But not everyone recognizes the decor benefit of these exceptional pieces, nor do they always know how to best display their personal art.

The secret is to design around the canvas. Allow the piece to own its space in a way that makes it look larger than it even is. Pair it with complementary colors like in the example below:

Find a place where your photos won't be in a visual competition with other decorations:

When it doubt......sweet and simple is the way to go. Overwhelming the space will only take away from the magnificence of the piece.

Photos of similiar formatting should be displayed together to promote a cohesiveness. Keep in mind that positioning your pieces across from seating creates an instant conversation starter as well as ensuring that your guest will notice your pride and joy : )

Never underestimate the power of matting! It's the accessory of the photo- and just like with a good outfit, the right accents have the power to make it or break it.

How to Choose a Wedding Photographer.....Part 1

When brides-to-be contact me for information on wedding packages and the process of telling their wedding day story through photos they tend to fall into two categories: very well informed or overwhelmed and unsure of the best way to approach the choice.

Wedding planners have been known to advise brides to designate 25% of their budget to hiring a photographer and purchasing prints as well as other photo keepsakes. Not only are you putting a large amount of money at stake, but once-in-a-lifetime memories as well. Your photographs become your souvenir of not only the excitement of the wedding process, but also a representation of the rest of your lives together that you will someday share with your children and grandchildren. Choosing the best photographer for your wedding day is not a decision to take lightly. In addition to my experience, I performed a week long search of the information available on the internet and am pleased to share with you what I think will be the most helpful advice.

For starters, the three standard styles of wedding photography are:
Traditional- formal portitature that captures the day in a straight-forward manner
Journalistic- an editorial style (if the name didn't already imply that) where the photographer takes more of a "fly-on-the-wall" approach.
Illustrative- a hybrid of the two. While the illustrative photographer directs more formal pictures while still trying to evoke a natural feel and uses thoughtfulness to try to capture moments the way the client will want to remember them.

When you envision your special day, what mood are you looking to portray? Whether you take a playful, romantic, family-oriented, elaborate, or your own unique approach, it's critical that the photographer be able to translate the emotions from life to print in a manner that best represents your vision.

Your first step will be a potential photographer's portfolio. Keep in mind that he/she will be showing you what he/she believes to be the best wedding shots of their careers. If you aren't blown away by their best, consider the "Get Out Now" sign to be neon colored and flashing.

Ask to see a complete album so you can get a feel for the stories he/she tells through film (realistically, digital images- but the story should have a romanticism similar to the art of film).

Check out the brides you're seeing. Are they all poised for the runway? Making pretty people in pretty dresses look pretty in a photograph doesn't showcase talent as well as a photographer who can highlight a less photogenic bride in ways that make her glow off the page.

A Los Angeles Love explores the same topic (beware: she does not appear to be a fan of sugar coating her words), with a point that I couldn't help but share: "A photographer is great when they can see the genuine beauty in pure love, regardless of how it's packaged."

A couple other tidbits for thought:
Look for consistency in how the photographer handles the light and what are the varieties in shooting with different lenses, angles, and from different locations?

Is there an appreciation for details? We all find ourselves consumed by our busy lives from time to time. This time of year, life tends to throw alot at us all at once, wrapping up winter projects, preparing for summer, and all the day-to-day necessities squeezed in between. Yet this time of year also brings us a lovely respite in the form of Spring and Sunshine.

Natural sunlight provides us with much needed Vitamin D to strengthen our bones, muscles, and immune system. Sunlight also stimulates serotonin production from the brain aka sunshine boosts your mood and makes you happy!

Please note this does not count:

How often have you heard a warm, radiant smile, compared to sunshine? A genuine smile contains both the health and happiness benefits of a ray of sunshine. So does that make laughter the sound of sunshine?

So the next time you feel overwhelmed, please take a minute (or 15 if possible!) to go outside for a sprin stroll and open up your eyes and ears to the beautiful sights and sounds of the season.

The instant our fluffy little ducks and chicks hear people voices, they chime right in with their two cents!

With such distinct personalities, I thought it was only appropriate that they each get their own feature.

Please keep in mind, the duckies are equally as loved and cherished but as they are brand-stinking new to their home in the studio, we're still trying to figure each other out. Name suggestions are strongly encouraged! : )

Meet Alfie!
He's just a go-with the flow, lovable guy who's full of suprises.
The secret trick up his sleeve? Laying on his back and letting you rub his belly.
Downside? Worried parents sometimes think their child killed your bird.
Plus, he looks exactly like a chipmunk! Same stripe down the back and all!

Now say hello to Bandit.
He's the little rascal of the group.
Always pecking and bullying the others for their food.
But we all know that his actions just stem from his insecurity of being tiny,
so he picks on others before they get the chance to pick on him.

Final introductions go to Jolie.....or is this Georgianna?
The two are nearly inseperable, so this photo is quite the rarity.
However, having the together has become the only way to tell them apart!

We've all seen the formal family photos with backgrounds that remind you of the highly anticipated second grade class photo. Which traditionally leads into the topic of matching outfits.
Even if you don't like math, these equations should be doable:
matching=bad
complementary, color-coordinated=good

Ok, with that hot-button issue out of the way, let's start thinking about locations. As always, nothing is off-limits (it's pre-assumed that we're bringing the level of taste and style to the photo that the AwkwardFamilyPhotos are painfully lacking).

A good place to start, as obvious as it may be, your home. Your home is your family's sanctuary, as well as the place best-suited to magnify your unique family dynamics. You have the option to play up everyone's familial "role", whether it be through exaggerated outfits, gestures, or facial expressions. Every member makes up the heart of the home, therefore, your family portrait can be a (noninvasive) CT Heart Scan.
Don't forget the furry members!

Another source of inspiration, Saturdays. What is the one activity that every member of your family willingly jumps out of bed to do on a Saturday morning?

If the whole family likes going to ball games? Let's take your photo on the field!
Are you a family who delights in the great outdoors? Go to your favorite "secret spot" (everyone has one!) and capture the magic of what that special place means to you.
If your family rejoices in volunteering and giving back to the community? Talk to your photographer about incorporating your work and how to take the portrait from a rigid sitting to a work of art filled with emotional meaning for all of you.

And if none of these ideas have got your creative brain juices flowing, think bigger.
Think of that one day every year that your family counts down to the other 364 days. Whether it be a holiday, birthday, special family event (mud football, texas golf, ice hockey....any sort of tournament you might put on), opening day of baseball season, the first tailgate, the first snowfall, the county fair, Memorial Day barbecue.....

In the end, your family portrait should convey more than your faces; when asked the question, "What does it mean to be a [Your last name here]?" you should be able to point to that photo for all the answers anyone may need.

With the days getting longer and the temperatures warming up, how can you not want to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather?!

While I've had great shoots at the beach, I know you all can be more creative in your location choice to really make your engagement session, senior portraits, family photos, and wedding pictures stand out.

For example, frolicing in a flower-filled field can capture the effortless feel of a beach while providing an intense color backdrop to really make the image *POP*

A favorite bench in a local park can be captured timelessly in black and white/neutral tones or you can be incredibly playful in body language, outfit choice, and even add-in some props.

Here's one of my absolute favorites: Trampoline! Really, no one ever looks boring on a trampoline. I'm envisionning a brilliant blue sky background and endless semi-acrobatic poses. Although simply photographing you laying on the trampoline holding hands can create a serene feeling with the green grass framing the background.

Incorporating your passions never fails to produce priceless photos. Whether you love wakeboarding, skiing, rollerblading, horseback riding, golfing... we'll find a way to transcend your zest and zeal into a work of art.

On that note, for more ideas of unique outdoor shoots, try turning to local art. Grand Rapids has had the fortune to have benefitted from ArtPrize in that many of the exhibits have become permanent fixtures in the community. Find a piece that truly inspires you and the rest will be a piece of wedding cake.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, wonderful readers!

Naturally, the "green" theme inspired me today in my search for unique wedding ideas (not a reference to the green in your wallet) and I feel that planning an eco-friendly wedding with various shades of green colors would be not only admirable, but incredibly modern as well.

The easiest place to start would be invitations (and similarly ending with the thank-you stationary). There are seemingly endless possibilities ranging from recycled paper to Poo Poo Paper which can be made from Elephant, Cow, Horse, and Panda.......Poo. Printing with soy-based inks also helps the environment and stays on trend. One statistic I read compares the amount of paper used in wedding invitations per year to being able to cover the entire area of Manhattan. So just modifying that one aspect can make an impact!

And ladies, being fashion conscious and environmentally aware can coexist in peace and beautiful harmony. Vintage jewelry/dresses, recycled stones and metals, ethically mined diamonds, sustainable fabrics, and all-natural beauty products offer unique and guilt-free alternatives.

Yes, limos are fun and glamorous, but you aren't the only one paying the price of luxury- the environment bears the cost as well. A horse-drawn carriage can provided a romantic alternative (if distance allows). Otherwise, arranging a charter bus for you and your guests between ceremony, reception, and hotel can double as being both environmentally and socially responsible.

but this destination wedding took place on Mackinac Island, MI.
The 2.54 square mile island has an ordinance again motor vehicles and relies on horse carriages, bicycles (don't forget a tandem option!), or old-fashioned walking.

Which means.....Wedding Season is upon us!

I love weddings. Still in the stages of being a newlywed, all things wedding excite me that much more. Because I've had the pleasure of working on weddings with the best of Grand Rapids, when it came to planning my own wedding I already knew exactly what I wanted and where to get it.

I also love talking to people. And in talking to some of the brides Sunday, many of the ladies seemed overwhelmed with planning their weddings. Location, the perfect dress, not being the bride to choose horrible bridesmaid dresses, giving favors people actually want, lighting and sound, invitations, the ever-delicate seating charts, the cake, choosing a photographer......even if you have a wedding planner, it's easy to get lost in the decisions and details!

Staying inspired is the key to staying sane in the wedding madness. Your love match is the reason for the season so your wedding day should best embrace those quirks that make your love worth celebrating! Read often because I'll be researching and brainstorming on all subjects wedding to A) save you from creative mental blocks B) save you valuable time and C) bring back your blush and newly-in-love smile

Audrey & Mike Strieter Wedding

Audrey & Mike Strieter said "I Do"on October 10th, 2009 on the beautiful fall grounds of Blythefield Country Club. The college sweethearts incorporated the time of year into their decor theme using old wooden chairs, white pumpkins and a wreath of dried leaves that hung on the tree over there heads in memory of the grooms late mother. After the ceremony we took the couple and their wedding party back to where he had proposed to her in downtown Rockford for a photo session as well as Townsend park just in time to miss the rain! The reception was beautifully put together by Ele3 Event & Design. No detail was overlooked when creating the finishing touches on the chair covers, clusters of candles, vases and white pumpkins. The classic black and white color scheme made for a simple yet elegant atmosphere for the couple to celebrate their new life together!

Marilee & Adam became Mr. & Mrs. Wells on the grounds of English Hills Country Club on September 26th, 2009. We did not have to travel far to find the perfect fall backdrop for photos since the ceremony overlooked the golf course bordered by the brilliant color changing tree line. Inside the clubhouse they were able to tie in a little of the outside with centerpieces made of branches, squash, small pumpkins and berries illuminated with tea light candles and water filled vases with floating candles. The night came alive with the marriage dance! The winners and longest married couple were the Grooms Grandparents, whose marriage is a great example for any newlyweds!

Childhood friends Jenny & Casey Carmody tied the knot on September 5th, 2009 at New Life Church. The Bride and Groom rolled up in style in a restored Vintage Buick in memory of Casey's late father, the previous owner of the 1933 classic. This vintage style became the theme for the day with bridesmaids wearing chunky pearl costume jewelry and vintage shawls. Downtown Rockford was the perfect backdrop for wedding party photos with the gaslight walkway over looking the river and old foot bridge. We then headed to Wabasis Lake Park for a vintage picnic reception. The tables were adorned with mason jar vases and small tea cups with candles making it a very cozy, homespun atmosphere, perfect for bringing two families together.

The reception took place at Sunnybrook Country Club where the bride and groom took a moment to step away for some more intimate and fun shots of just the two of them at dusk on the rich, rolling greens of the golf course while guests enjoyed cocktails and the ever famous candy bar!

Christine & Matt Olsen tied the knot on August 8th, 2009. The rain held off allowing for the outdoor ceremony to go off without a hitch on the lake view backyard of a close family friend. With friends, family and even a foreign exchange student who made the trip all the way from France at their side they were pronounced husband and wife. The wedding party and I then traveled onto Fallasburg Park where photography took place at the old covered bridge. The reception followed and began with the new couple making their entrance from the Grand Staircase of the Grand Volute Ballroom.

Becky & Jim Charon joined together in marriage on July 11th, 2009. They recited their vows in front of friends and family on the neatly groomed grounds of the historic Stuart Avenue Inn in Kalamazoo. The grounds were the perfect backdrop for family photos and a few romantic shots before we headed to campus of Kalamazoo College which proved to be a most desirable setting for romance and beauty. The reception venue was that of a local restaurant which allowed for a most delightful night to pursue in the soft glow of the twinkling lights that created an illuminated canopy over the dance floor.

Abby & Scott Lemmon celebrated their marriage on June 20th, 2009. The ceremony was held at the Grooms family church downtown at West Minister Presbyterian Church where several cousins, aunts and uncles recited their vows years before. After the ceremony the black tie affair moved to the downtown landscape for wedding party shots before heading to Noto's Italian restaurant for the reception. There the groomsmen changed into black sneakers & the bridesmaids wore flip flops as they prepared to dance the night away. As the bride and groom shared their first dance together to Marc Cohn's "True Companion" it was clear to all that these two were the definition of true companions.

One of the things I love most about my job is that I get to meet some awesome people

whose lives, like mine, revolve around the wedding industry. With all these connections at my fingertips I can't help but want to take the opportunity to give all you soon to be brides the

inside scoop on one of my favorite wedding planning resources to date, ele3 Event Design & Planning! After dinner & drinks at Rockwell's with Jen Warner one of the 3 owners & designers of ele3 I took the opportunity to ask her all the sorts of questions about ele3 & the services

they offer. I know, exciting right? What is even more exciting is that I am going to share all this information with you and answer those questions most brides are dying to have answered! Here I will share with you our interview word for word from Jen Warner herself making it quite obvious why ele3 is number one on my list of favorites and should be number one on

yours!

Q:How long has ele3 been in business?

A: Together as a company 1.5 years

Q:What 5 adjectives would you use to describe ele3?

A: Fun, unique, passionate, creative & organized.

Q: How did You, Kate & Sherri come together to create ele3?

A: Kate & I are like sisters and Sherri is my mom so when we both realized we wanted to start a business as wedding planners we decided that instead of being competition we would be partners and let all 3 of our creative juices come together as one. We are all in different aspects of the business with makes us all compliment each other well as a team.

Q:How did you come up with the name “ele3”?

A: we wanted a name that reflected each person equally and at the same time would be unique so we took the first letter of each our our middle names; 2 Elizabeths and Lynn the add the 3 signifying the three owners. We also wanted to show that we have gone green so we added a leaf above the second "e" elongating it to remind those of our eco friendliness.

Q:What are ele3’s goals as a business?

A: We hope to Eventually have our own event design boutique so that

we can have a place to accommodate brides and have all amenities to do so.

Q: What would you say is ele3’s key to success?

A: We are definitely client oriented and detail oriented.

Q: Describe to me what ele3 can do for today’s bride?

A: we can Customize any package to the clients unique needs & wants, there are no set prices or packages. We offer great many options for rentals such as chair covers & centerpieces. Not only do we work weddings but we also work corporate events as well.

Q:What is your favorite part of working with ele3?

A: Working with Kate & mom everyday and seeing our clients the day of being thrilled with all the details! Seeing them happy makes me happy!!

Q:How many weddings & Events would you estimate ele3 does a year?

A: Our first Full season we worked 18 different events offering various different services.

Q: On the day of the wedding do you oversee the entire event, supervise vendors, troubleshoot emergencies, set up décor, and soothe nerves?

A: Pretty much all of the above!

Q: Do you provide counsel for brides & grooms on etiquette?

A: Absolutely!

Q: Do you charge for the initial meeting?

A: No!

Q: Are you present at all the vendor meetings and tastings?

A: Yes, If the client would like us to be.

Q: Do you attend the Rehearsal?

A: Yes, Our work usually starts the day before the event and we are with you from start to

finish!

Q:What professional organizations does ele3 belong to if any?

A: MWEP Michigan Wedding & Event Professionals.

Q: What is the largest wedding you have managed?

A: 350+ people.

Q: Describe a typical day for ele3?

A: When we say we are "with you from start to finish" we mean it! Depending on what services they have required we do anything from picking up flowers, day of coordinating, having the bride drop everything off to us the day before to bring the day of, to creating a timeline as best we can for the very busy big day.

Q: What is in the future for ele3?

A: Work space in downtown Grand Rapids and the blessing of more business!

A Wish for Isaiah

When Erica from Make-a-Wish foundation called me on Thursday I had no idea that the job she had for me would impact my life so greatly. As a photographer I have been a part of many peoples precious moments and greatest memories documenting each one to the best of my abilities. This time I would be capturing moments that most parents fear and pray they never have to live through. Like most people I have met in my career Amanda, David and Isaiah are truly wonderful people but what sets them apart from the rest is their remarkably touching story. A story of courage and the power of love so amazing that I must share it with you.

Isaiah is 3 years old. He was born a perfectly healthy baby boy in Liberia. It wasn't until he was around 3 months of age that his mother noticed something was not right. Isaiah had an abnormally large head for a baby his age and this could only mean one thing, neurological problems. She began traveling form mission to mission looking for the help her son needed with no success. When she went to the liberian government asking for them to send him out of the country and to the United States for the medical attention he so desperately needed she was turned down. There reasons were simple, she was still alive and Isaiah was not an orphan. On she traveled from port to port in search of anyone who might have room to take them with. For 2 years she went on searching for the help her son needed facing many struggles along the way. The illness Isaiah had left him unable to walk making it impossible for her to go anywhere without her carrying him. The people of Liberia believed that the disorder that left Isaiah with an enlarged head was as a sign of the devil and threatened to stone anyone effected by it. So everywhere she went she made sure to hide his head from the public eye until she was no longer able to. Her own heartbreak aside she gave Isaiah up for adoption.

Isaiah was taken in by a foster family in Missouri where he received the medical attention he so desperately needed. He was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus which is a build up of fluid inside the skull, leading to brain swelling. Hydrocephalus means "water on the brain." Isaiah underwent surgery to have a shunt put in and shortly after that in August he was adopted by a

Family in Grand Rapids Michigan. Amanda & David along with there 2 cats, 2 dogs, sons Chris & Cole (also a make-a-wish child) and a foreign exchange student became Isaiah's new family and a wonderful one at that! When Monday rolled around things seemed to be going down hill with Isaiah's health and he became unable to breathe. He was rushed to Urgent care where he was put on life support. Cat scans revealed that the Shunt had caused so much pressure in his skull that it collapsed his brain taring all the blood vessels in his skull making him bleed internally andeventually fell into a coma. They were able to save his brain stem but by Tuesday they ran out of options and decided to take him off life support. Since he was an organ donor they had to wait for Isaiah to die a cardiac death before they could proceed, but after waiting 45 minutes for this to happen Isaiah's strong and healthy 3 year old heart kept beating. The decision was made by the family to take him home. Hospice was called and by tuesday night he was at home in his own bed with his dogs, cats, brothers, parents and

grandma at his side.

Being the fighter that he is Isaiah was still going strong by Thursday when Make-a-wish decided to grant the family their last wish for him and I was called. " I want pictures of his precious little feet that have never been walked on and his little hands so that I can always remember how soft they are," His mother told me as we both held Isaiah's soft little hands. With camera in hand and tears in my eyes I took with honor the opportunity to

document what might be this families last days with there darling Isaiah. Amanda (mom) told his story to me an decided that "God just needs a really cool kid I guess to help him out in heaven. He and God have things worked out and when his time comes it will be right and we will all be at peace with it." With every word she spoke Isaiah's eyes fluttered as if he could hear her voice and wanted to open his eyes and look at her. For Amanda I prayed he would, one last time, just for her. As of this morning Isaiah was still with us, his family will stay in my prayers and hopefully yours and when it is that little angels time to go it comforts me to knowthat the memory of Isaiah will live on through my photographs.
